She ended up on the street with his children – and he didn’t even know about it.

A cold autumn morning shrouded the park in a grey mist. Margherita was there as usual, feeding the pigeons. She carried a thermos of coffee and a bag of bread. Everything was going as usual… until her gaze fell upon a bench.

She almost walked right past. The woman sitting there didn’t seem dangerous, just exhausted. Her eyes were closed, her shoulders slumped, and she clutched two bundles to her chest. At her feet were bags that seemed to contain her entire life.

Margherita sat beside them and did not interfere.

Soon one of the bundles began to stir and cry. Then the second one. The woman shuddered, woke up, and began to rock the bundles with barely open eyes.

“Boy or girl?” Margherita asked quietly.

“Both a boy and a girl…”, the woman replied.

The children were only three months old.

Her name was Clara. The little ones were named Leo and Sofia. The conversation flowed naturally. Gradually, she realized: she had nowhere to go. She was hungry, but too tired to admit it right away.

Margherita handed her coffee and biscuits. As she watched the children, she suddenly recognized familiar features in the boy’s face – as if she had seen him before.

“What is your last name?” she asked cautiously.

– Ferrante… formerly Greco.

Margherita froze.

– My son’s name is Adriano Greco.

The silence between them became oppressive.

Clara immediately became suspicious.

“He knows nothing at all. And I don’t want his help.”

However, Margherita had already decided otherwise.

She took out her mobile phone.

Adriano was in a meeting when his mother urgently called him to the park. At first, he didn’t understand what was going on, but he went anyway.

When he saw Clara… time seemed to stand still.

— Clara…

His gaze slid to the children – and he understood everything without words.

— How long have you been here?

Eleven days…

There used to be a shelter there, but they abandoned it.

Why didn’t you contact me?

– Why? You were busy with your own life.

He didn’t know what to say. He really didn’t. But that didn’t excuse anything.

Margherita intervened:

– You’re coming with us.

Clara hesitated, but for the sake of the children she agreed.

Adriano’s house welcomed them with silence and spaciousness. He offered them a room.

“I’m not asking for anything,” he said. “I just want to be near her.”

Clara didn’t quite believe him, but she stayed.

The doctor came the next day. The children were fine, just a little weak. Clara was exhausted and needed rest.

Adriano put everything aside.

He learned how to be a father from scratch: he changed diapers, fed and rocked his child. And for the first time in a long time, he felt his life was worth living.

Clara watched him. She still believed she could manage it alone. But now she had to admit to herself that perhaps she didn’t have to do it entirely alone.

Over time, everything began to change.

Adriano set new priorities, put his work aside, and focused on his family. The people around him didn’t understand, but he was convinced of his decision.

Clara gradually regained her senses. A cautious intimacy developed between them.

“I want to try again,” she said one day. “But not like before. Different. Honest.”

“I would like that too,” he replied.

A year has passed.

They found themselves back in the same park.

Now there are three of us… no, there are four.

Clara stopped at a bench she knew well.

“I was angry with your mother back then,” she said quietly. “But now I understand: It was the right decision.”

Adriano squeezed her hand.

Her son looked at him and smiled.

And at that moment it became perfectly clear to him: He was finally in his place.

Don’t chase after the future. Don’t cling to the past.

He is here.

With those who are truly important.

And everything else can wait.
